In order to begin preliminary sizing for the components of the HVAC system, an eQuest analysis was conducted for the 20 story ASCE Headquarters which is to be located in Chicago, Illinois. The results of the analysis are presented in the tables below.
Table 1) eQuest Analysis Results for Electric and Gas Consumption
Table 2) Gas and Electric Consumption from eQuest Analysis
The numbers boxed in red represent the peak values for each individual system (cooling and heating). We utilize those values, along with typical design parameters (standard indoor temperature as well as leaving air temperature) in order to determine the Peak CFMs for each system.

Table 4) CFM Calculations
Based on the numbers calculated, need for heating is much higher than that of cooling. Because the numbers are so large, the group chose to utilized multiple Air Handling Units to distribute the air throughout the 20 story structure.

Because of assumptions made in the eQuest analysis, the values calculated could vary from the values that the actual building would produce; these analysis results would have to be carefully inspected before construction began to ensure that they accurately model the HVAC requirements of the building. As a result, the sizing may change as further information is collected. The locations of the parts of the HVAC systems may also change as other systems such as plumbing and electrical are designed.
